System Sound Facilitates The Last Ship for Opening of QPAC’s Glasshouse Theatre
System Sound Facilitates Opening Production of The Last Ship at QPAC’s New Glasshouse Theatre
System Sound has played a key role in facilitating the opening production of The Last Ship at the new Glasshouse Theatre, delivered by Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane.
As one of the first technical teams to work inside the venue, System Sound was engaged to help establish the operational audio environment for a large-scale musical production in a completely new theatre.
Enabling a Touring Production to Open Efficiently
System Sound supplied the core mixing and RF backbone for the production, including a DiGiCo theatre console package and a full suite of Sennheiser digital wireless microphone systems.
This allowed the incoming UK production team to arrive with their show control systems, programming, and creative intent intact — enabling a faster, more seamless path to opening.
By providing a fully prepared and integrated audio infrastructure, System Sound ensured the production team could focus on execution rather than system build.
Senior Personnel on Site
To support the delivery, System Sound deployed four senior team members to Brisbane, including David Greasley — Associate Sound Designer for The Book of Mormon and Sound Designer for Sunset Boulevard.
This level of experience on site ensured that system integration, tuning, and troubleshooting could be handled efficiently in a high-pressure opening environment.
Additional Meyer Sound Deployment
While the core house system at QPAC is based on Meyer Sound loudspeakers, System Sound supplemented the installation with additional inventory to meet production requirements.
This included:
A dedicated front-of-house monitoring system
A stage foldback system
Deployment of Meyer Sound ULTRA-X20 loudspeakers from System Sound stock
These additions provided improved monitoring accuracy for operators and performers, while supporting consistent coverage and system flexibility across the stage and auditorium.
First Team In: Establishing the Baseline
As one of the first external production teams to operate in the Glasshouse Theatre, System Sound contributed critical real-world feedback on system behaviour, integration, and workflow within the space.
This early-stage involvement is significant, as it helps inform how the venue will support future productions — particularly large-scale musical theatre where system performance, coverage, and reliability are essential.
Supporting a Major Opening
With music and lyrics by Sting, The Last Ship represents a technically demanding opening production for the venue.
System Sound’s role focused on ensuring the infrastructure, deployment, and system readiness allowed the production to open efficiently and perform reliably from the outset.
Looking Ahead
The opening of the Glasshouse Theatre marks a major expansion of QPAC’s capabilities, creating new opportunities for large-scale touring productions in Queensland.
System Sound continues to support productions and venues across Australia with system integration, equipment supply, and specialist personnel for high-performance live sound environments.
